MAD

These are some of the things young people say about their parents' break-up

From a young person at a MAD group

MAD — Making a Difference

MAD is the KidsAreFirst group for young people between the ages of 13–17 whose parents have separated. (Banana Splitz is for children 5-12 years old)

MAD is designed to give young people the opportunity

  • to be supported
  • adjust to separation and divorce
  • express their thoughts and feelings, and
  • let their families know what they need

Young people meet other kids going through similar experiences and learn some new skills to cope with family changes.

The KidsAreFirst programs are typically presented in two-hour units presented over 4-6 weeks depending on the program, location and need.

Where can you find MAD

MAD is a state wide service. Groups are currently being run within schools. Regional groups are also negotiable.

Our office address is 184 Port Road, Hindmarsh SA 5007. For more information, call KidsAreFirst on 8301 4200.

What do we do?

The Banana Spliz and MAD group programs are full of fun and exciting activities designed to give the children and young people a safe, non-confrontational way to explore their family experiences. Both programs include games, stories, craft and music in an age-appropriate manner. We also use a variety of therapeutic techniques in order to open up discussion and encourage growth.

Registration process for the KidsAreFirst program

Before a child can attend a group, a worker will meet with parent(s) at an intake interview to identify the child’s experiences and discuss the group program. Interview sessions are approximately one hour for parents. Issues covered will include safety and confidentiality, with information also provided regarding other services that may be of interest. Although it is not mandatory, both parents’ consent is preferred for the child or young person’s participation in the program.

KidsAreFirst provides both parents with feedback regarding their child’s participation in the group. As KidsAreFirst is a short term service, feedback is a great opportunity for parents and KidsAreFirst workers to develop a long term support strategy tailored to their children’s needs.

Short term, individual counselling is also offered to children and young people where necessary. All children are given confidentiality. Counsellors however are mandated notifiers and are required by law to break confidentiality in regards to child safety. Otherwise, children receiving counselling have the right to confidentiality regarding any discussion with the children’s worker.

The cost is $30 per child for the full program. There is a concession for card holders.
Please call us for more information about individual counselling.

If you have any questions about MAD, or any other KidsAreFirst program, call us on 8301 4200.
